different researchers in different parts of the world have investigated the strategies used to translate written works ranging from novels to classroom assignments. however, by the significant increase in the number of postgraduate students in iran in the last few years, a very common kind of translation in iran includes translating abstracts of master’s theses. in this work, the researcher have investigated what translation strategies proposed by baker (1992) are used in translating abstracts of master’s theses from persian to english. therefore, the qualitative method has been selected to carry out a case study using the keywords in 50 translated abstracts. moreover, the cohesion and coherence of these translated works are assessed using de beaugrande and dressler’s (1981) definition. the analysis of the data show that translating by a more neutral (less expressive) word and translating by using a loan word or a loan word plus explanation, were the two most frequently used translation strategies. the results also showed that there were totally 172 missed cohesive markers in 50 pages of translated abstracts i.e. an average sum of about four markers in each abstract which makes the abstracts not very cohesive. there were also 70 missed systems of coherence in the translated abstracts forming an average sum of 1.4 systems in each abstract.
